[Action Script] Game Dev: Creating "better" collision detection June,2012

Hello all!

I am currently working on a simple game in Flash CS 5.5. I have some basic engine components set up and came across a minor detail that really bugs me. The hitTestObject() code seems to detect the whole canvas of the sprite I imported and makes it complicated to build a "smooth" collision detection. I realize this is not likely to be a code error, but is there a way to fix this without having to re-size the canvas of the sprites I'm importing?
